Why people split
British opinion on beards has moved further in a decade than almost any other appearance question YouGov tracks, and it has moved toward indifference rather than toward approval. Among British women, the share preferring a man with a beard rose from 6% in 2011 to 13% in 2016 and 19% in 2023. Over the same period the share preferring a clean-shaven man fell from 66% to 36%, and the share with no preference either way climbed from 27% to 44%. Among women aged 18 to 39 the change is starker still, with beard preference rising from 7% in 2011 to 34% in 2023. Across all GB adults in 2023 the split was 17% preferring a beard, 28% preferring none and 53% expressing no preference at all. Supply moved too: 54% of British men reported some facial hair, up from 37% in 2011. The result is a subject where the honest majority answer is a shrug, and the minority who do care are split roughly three to two against.
