Why people split
Quinnipiac asked the same people the same question twice, and the two answers are what make this worth arguing about. On legal betting on professional sports, Americans split 41% good thing to 47% bad thing, close enough to be a real disagreement. On legal betting on college sports, the identical question produced 30% to 60%. Nothing about the mechanics of placing a wager changes between the two readings. What changes is who is being bet on. The thirty-point swing is an objection to money riding on athletes who are young, unpaid, or both, rather than an objection to gambling itself. That is why polling that lumps all sports betting into one question tends to land somewhere in between and satisfies nobody.
