Why people split
YouGov asked both sides to say why, and the two answers are not mirror images of each other. Among Americans who enjoy extreme sports, the most common reason chosen was experiencing new things, followed by stress relief; at least one in three also picked physical fitness, confidence-building, thrill-seeking or pushing personal limits. Among those who do not enjoy them, the most common answer was simply a lack of interest, chosen by 60%, followed by fear of injury, physical limitations and a lack of skill. Cost, time and access were each picked by one in five or fewer, so the objection is rarely practical. Fear of injury is not unfounded either: 21% of Americans say they have been hurt doing something they consider an extreme sport or activity.
