Why people split
The odd thing about this argument is that the people who want early decorations and the people who put them up are not the same population. YouGov found in November 2021 that 24% of Americans said they wanted to start seeing holiday decorations in their community in early November or even sooner, while only about 16% of people who decorate planned to start their own that early. More want to see it than want to do it. The rest of the season is compressed into a narrow window: almost half of decorators get started between Thanksgiving and the end of November, around one in six waits until early December, and only 5% leave it until mid-December or later. Decorating also spreads by sight rather than by calendar: three in ten people who decorate say they are inspired by seeing how other people have decorated their homes, while close to half say their decorating ideas come from nowhere in particular. One early house on a street is therefore doing more work than its owners realise.
