The nylon fanny pack was named product of the year by Adweek in 1988 and peaked in the 1990s, then slid out of fashion from the mid-2000s and became shorthand for dressing badly. The revival was in large part a renaming. From around 2012 designers began selling the same object as a belted satchel or hands-free bag at prices reaching roughly $1,995, and by July 2018 Gucci, Prada and Louis Vuitton all offered versions. Wearers also moved the bag off the waist and onto the chest as a crossbody strap, which visually separates the new version from the old one.
