Why people split
High-waisted trousers are one of the few garments in YouGov's survey that divide sharply by age and by gender at the same time, which is why the national total lands almost exactly level at 33% positive to 35% negative. Women split 44% positive to 27% negative; men split 21% to 44%. The age gap is wider still: 57% of Americans aged 18 to 29 love or like them against just 10% who do not, while among those 65 and over the figures reverse to 17% and 49%. YouGov's own write-up singles out high-waisted trousers, ripped jeans and skinny jeans as the items where the gap between adults under 45 and adults 65 and over is especially large. The rise line is also the visible marker of a cycle: it moved down through the 2000s and back up through the late 2010s, so the same waistband reads as current to one age group and as a period costume to another.
