Why people split
The objection to a household robot is not really about robots. When YouGov asked Americans what worried them, the top answer was cost (60%), followed by reliability and performance (49%), privacy and data security (48%), safety for family members (43%), space in the home (33%) and, a long way down, job displacement (21%). The money answer is borne out by what people say they will pay: about a third would spend under $500 and a fifth between $501 and $1,000, which is well below what the prototypes shown at CES actually cost. Enthusiasm also tracks age steeply (52% of 18-to-34-year-olds are interested against 26% of over-55s), and the tasks people want handed over are the dull, repetitive ones: cleaning floors (93%), dishwashing (87%), laundry and home organisation (86% each). Interest drops to 55% for elderly or child care. Americans are not split on whether machines should do chores; they are split on whether this particular machine, at this price, will work.
