Why people split
Leg warmers began as functional dancewear, worn to stop muscles cramping after stretching. They left the studio in the early 1980s on the back of three films, Fame, Xanadu and Flashdance, arriving at the same moment as the aerobics boom, which is why they are remembered as a decade marker rather than as equipment. The polling shows something unusual for a revival item: no generational argument at all. YouGov finds Americans aged 18 to 29 split 31% positive to 33% negative, 30 to 44 year olds at 28% to 37%, 45 to 64 year olds at 28% to 35% and the over-65s at 24% to 25%. Every age group lands in roughly the same place, and 35% overall are neutral, among the highest neutral shares of any clothing item tested. Most divisive garments set a young cohort against an older one. Leg warmers instead divide people within every cohort, which is a different and rarer kind of disagreement.
