Americans do not judge tattoos as a single category; they judge them by how hard the tattoo is to hide. YouGov asked in 2025 about six body locations and acceptability falls off in a clean line as the placement becomes less concealable: arm 78% acceptable, lower back 73%, torso 71%, hand 64%, neck 43%, face 19%. The neck sits almost exactly on the tipping point, with 43% calling it acceptable and 45% unacceptable, which is why it divides opinion when tattoos in general no longer do. The same survey found 37% favourable toward tattoos overall against 26% unfavourable, and 66% said noticing a large tattoo on someone would not change their opinion of them at all. The employment question is where the placement rule bites: 34% said visible tattoos are unacceptable for doctors and nurses and 39% said the same for K-12 teachers, and those questions single out face and neck tattoos as the separate, harder case.
