Why people split
Oversized clothing divides Americans more by gender than almost any non-revealing item in YouGov's battery. Women split 41% positive to 30% negative; men split 22% to 48%, a gap of roughly 37 points on the net score. Age pulls in the same direction and just as hard: 51% of 18 to 29 year olds love or like it against 20% who do not, while among those 65 and over the figures are 19% and 51%. The disagreement is really about whether clothes are supposed to describe the body underneath. A generation taught that a good fit means a close fit reads volume as sloppiness, or as clothes that do not belong to the wearer; a generation raised on the opposite convention reads the same volume as deliberate. Because both readings are internally consistent, the split does not resolve with exposure, and the survey's neutral share of 28% is smaller than for most items tested.
