Why people split
Ripped jeans produce the steepest age gradient of any garment in YouGov's 40-item battery. Among Americans aged 18 to 29, 52% love or like them against 32% who dislike or hate them. Among those 65 and over the same question runs 8% positive to 75% negative, a swing of well over 80 points across the age range. Almost nothing else in the survey moves that far. The reason the split holds rather than fading is that the two groups are not disagreeing about taste so much as about what the damage means: wear you earned, or wear you bought. The workplace evidence points the same way. When YouGov asked in 2026 what belongs in an office, ripped jeans were rejected by 78% for men and 76% for women, placing them alongside tank tops and pyjamas rather than alongside ordinary jeans, which 72% and 70% found acceptable. Intact denim is uncontroversial; the holes are the entire argument.
