Office sandals split three ways at once, and each split is measured rather than assumed. They split by country: 69% of Britons called sandals acceptable office wear in June 2026, against 31% of Americans asked about men in July 2026. They split by the sex of the wearer: in the same American survey, sandals on women were acceptable to 54% and unacceptable to 33%, a near-reversal of the 31% to 59% verdict on men. And in Britain they split by the sex of the respondent, with 82% of women calling sandals acceptable against 55% of men. Notably, the objection is not to open toes as such. The same British survey found flip-flops acceptable to only 28% and unacceptable to 67%, so respondents are drawing a line between a sandal and a flip-flop rather than between covered and uncovered feet. What looks like one question about footwear is really three separate disagreements stacked on top of each other.
