Why people split
A smart speaker only works because its microphone is always listening for a wake word, and that is the thing people divide over. Pew's June 2019 survey found that even among owners - people who chose to buy one and put it in a living room or a bedroom - 54% said they were very or somewhat concerned about the amount of personal data the speaker collects. Owners are also markedly unwilling to see recordings leave the house: 49% of Americans said it is unacceptable for smart speaker makers to share audio recordings with law enforcement to help with criminal investigations, against 25% who said it is acceptable. The domestic strangeness of the object shows up elsewhere in the same survey: 54% of owners say they ever say 'please' to it, including about one in five who do so frequently. A machine people are polite to and suspicious of at the same time tends to divide a household along the same line the microphone does.
