Tattoos are now normal enough that the interesting split is no longer about whether they are acceptable but about whether the acceptance went too far. YouGov's 2025 survey found 37% of Americans favourable and 26% unfavourable, with the largest single group, 35%, neither one nor the other. Asked directly, 39% said society has been about right in accepting tattoos, 29% said it has gone too far and 15% said it has not gone far enough. The underlying attitudes are less hostile than the argument suggests: 76% agreed tattoo design can be considered an art like painting or sculpture, and 66% said noticing a large tattoo on someone would not change their opinion of them. Roughly a quarter of American adults, 24%, have at least one. What remains contested is context rather than principle, since the same respondents who accept tattoos in general still draw firm lines around face and neck placement and around particular professions.
