Why people split
The trucker hat was never sold; it was given away. In the 1970s US feed and farming supply companies handed the caps to farmers, drivers and other rural workers as promotional items, which is why they were known as gimme caps or feed caps. The foam front and mesh back were a heat solution, not a style. In the early 2000s suburban skate, pop-punk and hip-hop scenes adopted the cap precisely because it belonged to somebody else, wearing rural workwear as a joke about class, and the irony curdled quickly once the joke became a retail category. YouGov's data records the residue of that history as the sharpest gender gap of any headwear tested: American men split 33% positive to 25% negative, while women split 16% to 37%. A further 12% say they do not know what a trucker hat is, one of the higher non-recognition scores in the survey for an object most people have seen.
