Why people split
Wide-leg trousers are the closest thing to a dead heat in YouGov's 40-item battery: 32% of Americans love or like them and 32% dislike or hate them, with a third neutral. The even total hides a clean generational slope. Among 18 to 29 year olds the split is 43% positive to 16% negative; among 45 to 64 year olds it reverses to 27% and 39%. That pattern is what a trouser silhouette mid-turn looks like in survey data. Leg width runs on a long cycle, and the same survey captures both ends of it at once: skinny jeans, the shape wide legs displaced, sit at 38% positive to 35% negative, while bootcut sits at 45% to 15%. Nobody is being asked whether a wide leg is well made. They are being asked whether the shape currently reads as fashionable or as dated, and the answer depends almost entirely on which cycle the respondent learned to dress in.
