Why people split
Americans are mildly in favour of the ask (51% call it acceptable against 26% who do not), but a second YouGov survey shows the real answer depends entirely on what is being asked for. Presented with different reasons, 75% said they would move so someone could sit beside a younger family member and 66% for a spouse or partner, but only 52% for a friend. Money persuades 54%. The most effective reason is not sympathy at all: 72% would switch if the swap got them a window, an aisle or more legroom. That is more than would do it for somebody's partner. Only 4% said they would refuse under any circumstances. So the etiquette question and the behaviour question describe different things. Almost nobody objects to being asked. What people object to is being asked to trade down. The request that fails is the one that moves someone from an aisle into a middle seat, whatever reason is attached to it.
