Why people split
Published figures on this disagree with each other, and the wording appears to be why. YouGov's August 2026 sleep survey asked Americans whether they are 'more of an early bird or a night owl' and got close to a tie: 42% chose one of the two early bird options and 46% one of the two night owl options. Its September 2025 breakfast survey asked a differently framed version of the same idea (whether respondents are 'more of a morning person' or 'an evening person') and found 32% morning against 53% evening. Same pollster, same country, a twenty-point gap. Early bird and night owl are folk labels people apply to themselves rather than measurements of anything, so the answer moves with how the choice is posed. The safe reading is that any single headline number about how many people are night owls should be treated with suspicion, and that the population sits somewhere near an even split.
