The dining table is not losing to the sofa everywhere: it is losing in Britain specifically. YouGov's survey of twelve Western countries found Britons the most likely of any of them to eat their main evening meal on living-room furniture, with 42% doing so against 45% who eat at a dining table; the same survey found Britain had the lowest share of dining-table eaters of any country asked. This is not a young people's habit either. Fewer than half of every British age group eats at the table, between 40% and 47%. The one real generational difference runs the other way: 18-to-24-year-olds are the least likely to eat on the sofa, at 20%, because many of them live in student rooms and small flats and eat on a bed (15%) or at a desk (13%) instead. What the sofa actually predicts is screens: 93% of people who eat there say they watch something while they do it, against 41% of those at a table.
