Monitoring divides almost exactly along the line between the people who do it and the people it is done to. YouGov's 2022 survey found Americans opposed employers tracking active and idle working time by 48% to 36%. But among managers, meaning people with at least one direct report, 55% supported it. The second fault line is what is being watched, not whether consent was given. Asked whether employers should be able to monitor employees' electronic activity on company devices as long as staff are told, 51% said they should and 24% said they should not. Apply the same disclosure test to physical activity or location on company property and support falls to 37% against 34% opposed. The objection, in other words, is less to being measured than to being followed. A third finding cuts across both: workers who already believe they are monitored are markedly more accepting of it, at 65% for electronic tracking and 57% for physical, than workers who do not. Around 30% of American workers think their time is tracked, and about 29% of managers say they track it.
