Britain is the outlier. YouGov asked adults in twelve countries whether they had a favourable or unfavourable view of travelling by each of nine modes of transport, and Britain was the only one of the twelve with a net negative view of the bicycle. The published tables give 42% favourable against 45% unfavourable; the write-up rounds the same figures to 43% and 46%. Americans answering the identical question in the same fieldwork came out clearly positive, 54% to 34%. Britain's reading is not a general hostility to getting about without a car, either. The same respondents rated the train 65% favourable to 28% and walking 82% to 14%. It is specific to cycling, and it is specific in one other way too: Britain was also the only country of the twelve with a net negative view of the coach. Whatever produces this, it does not extend to shared transport in general or to active travel in general.
