Ketchup on eggs is one of the few food habits that is losing an argument it used to win. YouGov found 57% of Americans dislike or hate it against 32% who like or love it, but the national figure hides a steep age gradient: around 68% of people aged 65 and over object, compared with 47% of adults under 30. On this question the oldest Americans are the most hostile and the youngest the most relaxed, which is the reverse of the usual pattern for a food convention. There is a regional layer on top. The Northeast is the only part of the country that splits evenly, at 46% who like it against 46% who dislike it, while majorities of between 58% and 62% in the Midwest, South and West come down against. So the practice is not fading uniformly: it is concentrated among younger Americans and in one region, and it is being rejected hardest by the generation that grew up with ketchup at its cheapest and most ubiquitous.
