Making the bed splits along a line that has nothing to do with the task and everything to do with who is expected to do it. In YouGov's 2025 survey of sixteen household tasks, 38% of Americans said they love or like making the bed, but women were eight points more likely than men to say so. Among people who do not live alone, women were at least twenty points more likely than men to say they were the person entirely or mostly responsible for it, and for tidying, dusting, laundry, cooking, washing dishes and most of the rest. Men were correspondingly more likely to describe the same tasks as shared about equally. Twice as many people who live with others say they do more than their fair share as say they do less, and among parents of under-18s the gap is 58% of women against 23% of men. So the 40% who are simply neutral are largely people for whom it is a thirty-second habit; the dislike concentrates among the people doing it, and everything else, every day.
