Why people split

The disagreement is about ownership, not convenience. Among gamers who prefer physical copies, 81% give permanent ownership as a reason and seven in ten say they are worried digital games could become unavailable in future. Sixty-five per cent want to be able to buy pre-owned, 56% value not depending on an internet connection, 52% simply enjoy collecting them and half want to be able to lend a game to someone else. The digital side answers with immediacy, chosen by 54%, access across multiple devices (41%) and price (40%). That is why opposition to disc-free releases reaches well past the disc buyers: 47% of gamers who themselves prefer digital copies oppose companies dropping physical releases, and 65% of opponents say a guarantee that purchased games stay permanently accessible would settle the argument.
