Why people split
Rinsing rice is one of the clearest examples of a kitchen rule that is inherited rather than reasoned. Just over half of Americans say you should rinse (53% yes, 29% no), but the agreement is very unevenly distributed. YouGov's breakdown found 47% of White Americans rinse, against 64% of Black Americans, 69% of Hispanic Americans and 76% of Asian American respondents. It also tracks age: 66% of adults under 30 say you should rinse, against 16% who say you should not, while support falls to 49% among older groups. That combination (strong among the young, strongest among the groups whose home cuisines treat washing as a standard step) describes a practice spreading outward from the kitchens where it was never in question. The unusually large not-sure share, 19%, is the other half of the story. A fifth of Americans have no inherited rule about this at all, which is roughly the share of the population that did not grow up cooking rice from a bag often enough to have been taught either way.
