Why people split

The striking thing about breakfast is that almost nobody argues with the principle. In YouGov's September 2025 breakfast survey, 70% said it is definitely or probably true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, against 19% who said it is not. Yet only 26% said they always eat it, and 24% said they rarely or never do. The reasons people give for skipping are not ideological either. Asked why they sometimes skip, 44% said simply that they are not hungry. That is well ahead of not having time (27%), wanting to eat fewer calories (13%) or not having breakfast food in the house (13%). Only 6% said they dislike breakfast foods. So the division is less a disagreement about whether breakfast is good than a difference in when appetite arrives in the morning, running up against a norm that nearly everyone says they believe.
