YouGov lists this among the handful of cabin behaviours that genuinely divide Americans: 37% say bringing a small dog on board is acceptable, 40% say it is not, and 23% cannot decide. The species matters. In the same survey a cat scores clearly worse (28% acceptable against 50% unacceptable), so the objection is not simply to animals in a sealed cabin. A separate YouGov survey eighteen months later suggests most people are not actually troubled in practice. Asked how big a problem various things are in US air travel, 39% said pets on board are not a problem at all, 30% called them a minor problem and only 12% a major one, placing pets near the bottom of a list of 26 complaints headed by ticket prices, air-traffic-control staffing and hidden fees. The gap between the two questions is the interesting part: people hold a firm view about whether a dog belongs on a plane while rarely meeting one that bothers them.
