Sushi produces a result almost no other food manages: it is simultaneously one of the most loved and one of the most hated items on the list. YouGov's July 2025 survey put 23% at love it (higher than beets, kale, okra or blue cheese manage) and 27% at hate it, which lands sushi among the ten most disliked foods Americans named. Only 14% were neutral. Reporting on the survey found the division tracks age and gender rather than region. Americans aged 45 and over were markedly more likely than younger adults to reject sushi, and women were more likely than men to dislike the seafood items in general, including sushi, oysters, squid and anchovies. That pattern fits a food that arrived in the United States within living memory: the people most likely to have grown up with sushi as an unremarkable lunch are the ones least likely to object to it, while the people who met it as an adult novelty are still deciding. It is less a disagreement about taste than a disagreement about how normal the food is.
