The coach is the other mode on which Britain stands alone. In YouGov's twelve-country survey, Britain was the only country with a net negative view of travelling by charter coach: 42% favourable against 48% unfavourable. Americans answering the same question in the same fieldwork were narrowly positive, 38% to 37%, with an unusually large 24% saying they did not know. The contrast inside Britain is sharper than the contrast between countries. The same respondents rated the train 65% favourable to 28%, and being a passenger in a car 76% to 18%. So this is not a dislike of being driven, and it is not a dislike of sharing a vehicle. Nor is it a dislike of buses in general: the local public bus scores 50% favourable to 44% among the same sample, a better result than the coach gets. Something separates the coach from both the bus and the train in British opinion, and it does so consistently.
