Published results on the four-day week disagree, and the reason is that it is rarely the same question. When YouGov asked 23,479 Americans in 2021 to choose between a four-day week of ten-hour days and a standard five-day, eight-hour week at unchanged pay, 67% picked four days and 21% picked five. That is a trade: the same hours, compressed. When Data for Progress asked voters about a four-day work week in 2019 without that framing, support was only a plurality, at 41%. The compression is the part people actually argue about, because ten-hour days move the school run, the commute and the whole evening, so the deal is much better for some households than others. YouGov also found the productivity case contested from inside the workforce: 41% of Americans said a four-day week would increase their productivity, 37% said it would have no effect and 9% said it would decrease it. Managers were more optimistic than the people they manage, with 45% expecting a gain against 37% of non-managers.
