Why people split
This is one of four behaviours YouGov flagged as splitting Americans almost evenly: 47% say it is acceptable, 39% say it is not. What makes it interesting is how differently the same respondents treat the underlying hazard. In the same survey, leaving your seat during turbulence was rejected by 82%. That is one of the four most condemned items on the whole list, level with getting drunk and just behind letting children play in the aisle. So Americans are close to unanimous that moving about in rough air is wrong, and close to evenly divided about ignoring the sign that tells you not to. The distinction being drawn is between a rule and a risk. Passengers appear to be judging the conditions they can feel rather than the instruction they can see, which is exactly the kind of private judgement that produces a 47 to 39 split: everyone agrees on the danger, and nobody agrees on who gets to decide when it has passed.
