Why people split
The workplace argument about tattoos is almost entirely an argument about placement. YouGov asked 2,224 British adults in 2022 whether different tattoos would be unprofessional. For visible tattoos anywhere other than the face or neck, 26% said unprofessional and 64% said not. For face or neck tattoos the answer reverses: 63% unprofessional against 28%. Non-visible tattoos are effectively settled, at 7% to 86%. The line people are drawing is not skin but coverability (whether the wearer retains the option of hiding it), which is why forearms and necks land on opposite sides. Profession moves the answer as much as placement does. Asked where visible tattoos are acceptable, firefighters scored best, with 31% accepting any visible tattoo including face and neck plus a further 43% accepting visible tattoos elsewhere; teachers scored worst. The overall picture is a norm in motion rather than a stable disagreement: about a quarter of British adults have a tattoo, and acceptance of visible arm tattoos is far higher below 55 than above it.
