Why people split
Doing the dishes is one of the few chores where men and women give opposite answers rather than differently sized versions of the same answer. YouGov's British survey found men more likely to view washing up favourably than unfavourably, 31% to 24%, while women were nearly twice as likely to see it negatively as positively, 38% to 21%. Set against the fact that 69% of British women say they do all or most of the housework, compared with 41% of men, the pattern is hard to read as a difference in taste. Across the wider list of chores the same survey found only a handful that are genuinely loathed (ironing, cleaning the bathroom, dusting and taking the bins out), while washing up sits in the contested middle, with between a quarter and a third liking it, a similar number disliking it, and the largest group neither one nor the other.
