Why people split

Britons are almost exactly split (51% say swearing with friends in a public place is acceptable, 47% say it is not), and the divide runs along age more than anything else. Fifty-one percent of over-65s hold a negative view of swearing in general, against 21% of 18-34 year olds. Frequency has moved too: 57% of Britons now swear most days or more, and only 8% say they never swear at all. The disagreement is not really about the words themselves. Almost nobody defends swearing in front of children (4% acceptable) or at a member of shop staff (2%), and almost everybody permits it alone at home (91%) or in response to physical pain (87%). What people genuinely disagree about is the middle case: a public place where strangers can hear you but you are not addressing them. One group treats overhearing as being sworn at; the other treats it as background noise.
